    The Mission

To provide education, training and employment in the field of technology for women and the disabled who are unemployed or underemployed.

    The Existing Business

I presently work with one specific open source program, Zen Cart. I can hire and train any bright mind to do work for me but am unable to take that step without additional capital.  I would need more computers, space, etc.

I had gotten close to doing this in Georgia before I moved to Virginia so this has been on my mind for a long time.  I and a number of my friends and clients are folks who simply need to work but have varying troubles with full-time employment.  So I already have a core of people – nationwide – who would benefit from this.

I’ve already moved into mobile development with Zen Cart and can see doing the same type of development with other open source programs. That then leads into development specifically for the iPhone and Android markets. The potential for work is vast.

    The Clients

Being able to provide more services to a client expands the business income.  For example, simple data entry  is something I do not do by choice, but also because no one is going to pay my rates to have it done.  Having a large pool of employees would make it possible to provide that service and some income for one of the employees. Becoming a one-stop shop then also removes barriers for my clients.

    The Scope

This business would provide more than just employment. People in these situations may need technical training, computers, career education counseling/classes and highly individualized employment hours and situations.

    Why Now?

Because there are many opportunities for grants and funding for women centered businesses finally.

    Why Me?

I have a unique set of skills and experiences including the technology background, teaching, training and career counseling as well having medical issues.  I am one of these people and I can do this. I have done this – through trial and error, through research and work. I know what is needed.

Why Am I Telling You This?

Today: all because I am planning to attend the Women Pitch Conference on February 14 in Mountain View, CA.  I have received a discounted ticket to the conference and need to find lodging and purchase a plane ticket.

So I’m looking for assistance in finding inexpensive lodging for 2 nights as well as hoping for a donation of someone’s frequent flier miles. All suggestions are welcome!

And later: because I do welcome any assistance (no matter the form) to get this on its way. Though we will be based in Charlottesville, telecommuting can bring this program out to anywhere.

    What About You?

Don’t you know someone who has a hard time with employment due to children, medical conditions, senior care, lack of specialized training but well educated, etc?  Let’s get together and take a new look at employment – let’s reduce unemployment and put people to work with the support they need to make a difference.

You may contact me via the form here. Please do not call as my call volume is already high enough to interfere with work!
